How do I visit a Fijian village respectfully?
Ask before you enter a village and, where you can, bring a sevusevu - yaqona (kava) roots presented to the chief or the village headman (turaga ni koro). Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered (a sulu is ideal), take off your hat and sunglasses in the village and your shoes before going into a home, and never touch a person’s head. Visiting a village →
What do Fijian words like dalo, yaqona, sevusevu and mataqali mean?
Our Farm words glossary explains them: dalo is taro, tavioka is cassava, yaqona is kava, a sevusevu is the customary gift of yaqona when visiting a village, a mataqali is a landowning clan, and a koro is a village. It also covers cane words like crushing season and sirdar. Open the Farm words glossary →
How do I plan a yaqona (kava) planting?
Use our free Yaqona (kava) planner: enter the area, spacing, cuttings per mound and planting date to see how many mounds and cuttings you need, the NPK and urea for the block, the date to side-dress (4 months after planting) and the harvest window (3 to 4 years). Add your own green kava per mound and price to see roughly how much dried kava and FJ$ the crop could give. The planting figures come from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways yaqona leaflet, which names August to October as the best planting time. Open the Yaqona (kava) planner →
How do I plan a dalo (taro) planting?
Use our free Dalo (taro) planner: pick one of 12 Fiji varieties (from Tausala ni Samoa at 5-6 months to Vula Ono, Kurokece, Dalo ni Toga and Toakula at 8-10 months) and your planting date to see when to cut and rest the suckers (3 to 5 days before planting), how long to keep the block weed-free (the first four months) and when your harvest window opens. It also says if you are planting inside the July to January planting time for intermediate rainfall areas and if the harvest falls in the cyclone season. Add your own corm weight, rejects and price to see the kg and FJ$ to sell. The figures come from the Fiji Dalo Quality Manual. Open the Dalo (taro) planner →

Use our free Cane payment estimator: enter the hectares harvested, the tonnes of cane delivered, the cane price per tonne for your season and your harvesting, transport and other deductions. It shows the gross cane payment in FJ$, what you keep, and your net per tonne and per hectare. It only does the arithmetic on your numbers - cane is usually paid in instalments, and your mill statements decide the real amount. Open the Cane payment estimator →
How do I get my farm ready for a cyclone?
Use our free Farm cyclone plan: a tick-off checklist in four stages - before the cyclone season starts on 1 November, when the Fiji Meteorological Service issues a cyclone alert, when a cyclone warning is issued, and after the cyclone has passed. It has 40 jobs to tick off, keeps your ticks on your own phone or computer only, and prints as a farm plan with Fiji’s free emergency numbers. Always follow the instructions of the Fiji Meteorological Service and the NDMO. Open the Farm cyclone plan →

How much chemical goes in each spray tank?
Use our free Spray tank mix calculator: enter the area, your water rate (L/ha), tank size and the label rate of up to three products. Use our free Feed cost comparer: enter each feed’s price per tonne, dry matter % and (if you have it) energy in MJ per kg of dry matter from the feed test. Use our free Water tank & dam calculator: pick a round tank, a square tank or trough, or a dam, enter its size and the water depth now.
