Dalo (taro) planner

For dalo growers in Fiji. Pick your variety and planting date to see when to prepare suckers, how long to keep weeds down and when your harvest window opens, plus what your own numbers point to at the market.

Your planting

Conical, medium corms, white flesh; long shelf life.

Sets the planting-time note.

Ask your Ministry of Agriculture extension officer about row spacing for your soil and variety.

Your harvest - your own numbers

Only an example: use what your own corms weigh.

Exporters reject about 10-15% for quality.

Your dates

  1. Cut and trim 1,000 healthy suckers of a similar size (about 4 cm across, 20-30 cm of stalk, 5 cm of root). Keep them in a covered, airy place off the ground for 3 to 5 days.
  2. Plant Tausala ni Samoa with the base of each sucker 15-20 cm below the ground. Deeper planting can weaken the plant.
  3. Keep the block free of weeds for the first four months. A mucuna bean cover can help hold weeds back.
  4. Harvest window for Tausala ni Samoa (5-6 months). Dig in the cool of the day, trim tops to about 5 cm, and never drop or throw the corms.

Growing dalo for market

  • Good suckers: use only healthy suckers of a similar size, about 4 cm across. Trim to 20-30 cm of stalk and 5 cm of root, then rest them 3 to 5 days in a covered, airy place off the ground.
  • Feed and weed: a soil test shows what fertiliser your block needs and when. Keep dalo free of weeds for the first four months; a mucuna bean cover helps hold weeds back.
  • Handle with care: dig in the cool of the day, trim tops to about 5 cm, never drop or throw corms, and set aside any with holes, cuts, bruises, rot or pests. Clean, gentle handling means fewer rejects.

Variety maturity, sucker preparation, planting depth and time, weeding and handling come from the Fiji Dalo Quality Manual (PHAMA programme, first published 2018; read 02/10/2026). Your own suckers, corm weight, rejects and price drive the harvest and value lines, so they are estimates only: soil, rain, pests, cyclones and the buyer's grading all change the real result. For spacing, fertiliser rates and export rules, ask your local agriculture extension officer or Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (see the farm help directory). Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Dalo is one of the Fijian kheti ke shabd in our glossary.

Cyclone season is coming
